We have a great book from the TCM channel called “Movie Night Menus” that has a classic movie, along with a matching themed menu with recipes. This recipe is from the menu plan for The Lady from Shanghai. We didn’t like the movie very much, but we absolutely loved this guacamole. It’s the go-to recipe for homemade guacamole in our family. Sesame oil adds a really great flavor, and the jicama gives it a great crunch.

Why You’ll Love This Recipe
- It’s creamy, crunchy, and a bit spicy—super fun to eat.
- Sesame oil adds a nutty, unexpected twist you will love.
- Perfect for parties, taco night, as a shared appetizer, or movie night snack.
Ingredients Needed
- Avocados: Make sure they’re soft but not mushy.
- Red onion: We like red onions as they are milder in taste and adds just the right sharpness and color.
- Jicama: An unexpected and refreshing crunch.
- Jalapeño: Brings a gentle heat. Make sure you remove the seeds. For a milder version, skip this.
- Lime juice: Brightens the flavor and prevents browning. You can add lemon juice instead.
- Sesame oil: We like using toasted sesame oil as it adds nutty depth.
- Ground black pepper: For a little heat and bite. Use freshly ground.
- Salt: Essential. Avocados need a lot of salt. If you add too much by mistake, add some more lime juice.
- Sesame seeds: The perfect finishing touch. Use black for a nice contrast in color or a mix of black and white.
- Chopped green onion: For garnish and extra pop.
How to Make Chunky Sesame Guacamole
This recipe comes together within minutes. For the full printable recipe, check out the recipe card at the end of this post.

- In a medium bowl, mash avocados with a fork until chunky smooth. Stir in onion, jicama, jalapeno, lime juice, sesame oil, pepper and salt. Garnish with sesame seeds and green onioin.
- Serve with warm tortilla chips
Helpful Tips
- Use a fork to mash the avocados: You want it chunky, not creamy so do this by hand and stop when you still have some small chunks left.
- Don’t skip the sesame oil. It’s what makes this recipe so special.
- Taste and adjust salt and lime juice as needed before serving. You can add more salt if it’s to acidic and more lime juice if it’s too salty.
- If you’re making it ahead of time, make sure to press plastic wrap directly onto the surface to prevent browning.
Storage Information
Refrigerator: Best eaten fresh, but can be stored in an airtight container for up to 1 day.
Make Ahead: You can prep the chopped veggies ahead and mash the avocados just before serving.
Freezer: It’s best to freeze just the mashed avocado and then add other ingredients right before serving. This helps prevent the guac from becoming watery during thawing.
Serving Suggestions
- Go classic and serve this with tortilla chips.
- Opt for veggie sticks ( think cucumber, carrots, celery) for a lighter option.
- On tacos, this guac adds creaminess and additional crunch.
- Great as a sandwich spread like for grilled veggie sandwiches.
Variations
- Add some chopped cilantro for extra freshness.
- Swap jicama for diced radishes, tomatoes or cucumber (no seeds). Note that cucumber will make this a bit more watery.
- Add some mango cubes for a fruity twist.
- Use a dash of rice vinegar instead of lime juice for a sushi-inspired twist.
- Go ahead and mix in a teaspoon of miso paste for an umami bomb.
Frequently Asked Questions
Try diced cucumber, radish or daikon instead of jicama.
The sesame oil is added for flavor alone so if you don’t like it or can’t find it, skip the oil altogether.
Sure, if you’re in a pinch or cannot find ripe avocados! Just stir in the sesame oil, jicama, and jalapeño to give it a fresh upgrade. Salt and lime juice needs to be adjusted to taste as ready-made guac is already seasoned.
