My friend Gayle shared this recipe with me when we worked together many years ago.  It’s a great quick appetizer that has a crunchy shell with a savory, cheesy pork filling.  I usually use hot pork sausage, but plain or even maple-flavored.  You can substitute other cheese as well. I typically use a Colby jack blend, but regular cheddar or pepper jack are both good.

Why You’ll Love This Recipe

  • Easy: Just 25 minutes from start to finish, no fancy prep needed!
  • Perfect for Entertaining: Easy to eat with your hands—no mess, no plates or cutlery needed.
  • So Much Flavor: You get cheesy, creamy, savory, and crispy with every single bite.

Ingredients Needed

  • Won Ton Wrappers: You can find them in the refrigerated section, often close to phyllo and puff pastry. Substitute with phyllo cups.
  • Pork Sausage: Use what you like. You can use plain or spicy sausage or even maple-flavored sausage, lamb sausage, turkey sausage, or a plant-based sausage.
  • Chopped Green & Red Peppers: For color, crunch, and sweetness. Any color combo you like.
  • Chopped Green Onion: Chives or shallots work too.
  • Ranch Dressing: For that creaminess and tangy flavor. You can use sour cream instead but you’d need to add some more spices to the filling.
  • Shredded Cheddar Cheese: You could also try Colby Jack, Pepper Jack, or mozzarella depending on your taste.

How to Make Sausage Won-Ton Stars

These crispy little sausage bites come together in just a few simple steps. For the full printable recipe, check out the recipe card at the end of this post.

  1. Preheat oven to 350F.
  2. Spray 24 muffin tin cups with cooking spray. Place one won-ton wrapper in each muffin tin cup and press down to make a cup from the wrapper. Spray each lightly with cooking spray.
  3. Bake for 5 minutes until the edges begin to become golden brown. Remove from oven and set aside.
  4. Brown pork sausage in a large skillet over medium-high heat until no longer pink. Remove from heat and drain excess grease.
  5. Add chopped peppers and green onions to the pork sausage and return to medium heat. Cook for 5 minutes.
  6. Remove from heat; add ranch dressing and shredded cheese and mix well.
  7. Spoon pork mixture into won-ton wrapper cups; about a heaping tablespoon in each.
  8. Place filled won-tons back in the oven and bake for an additional 6-8 minutes or until cheese is completely melted.
  9. Serve hot!

Helpful Tips

  • Won-Ton wrappers can dry out quickly so keep unused ones covered with a damp towel while working.
  • A small cookie scoop makes portioning the filling faster and neater.
  • A quick spritz of cooking spray inside the muffin tin and on top of the wrappers ensures extra crispness.

Storage Information

Refrigerator: You can store leftovers in an airtight container for up to 3 days and reheat in the oven. They will not be as crispy as the fresh batch.

Freezer: You can freeze unbaked filled cups on a tray, then transfer them to a freezer bag. Bake from frozen, adding a few extra minutes. Alternatively, freeze the baked cups and then cool them before wrapping them well and freezing them.  Bake them for about 15 minutes straight out of the freezer, or pop them in the air fryer to crisp up nicely!

Make Ahead: The filling can be made up to 2 days in advance and stored in the fridge. Assemble and bake when ready.

Serving Suggestions

  • Serve them as part of a party tray alongside some eggrolls, my German Onion Pie (cut into bite-sized portions) or my Classic Cheese Ball.
  • Turn them into a holiday appetizer by serving them alongside a festive salad.
  • You could even serve these as a main dish paired with my Best Tossed Salad Recipe.

Variations

  • Spice it up: Use hot sausage and add a dash of your favorite hot sauce. You could even add in some diced jalapeños or green chiles.
  • Southwest Style: Add a sprinkle of taco seasoning to the sausage filling.
  • Up the veggies: Add some finely chopped mushrooms and sautee them alongside the sausage in step 4.

Frequently Asked Questions

What dipping sauce works well with these?

Honestly, those don’t need any dips but if you have leftover Ranch, that would be the best choice here.

Can I use mini muffin tins instead?

Great idea! Cut your won-ton wrappers into smaller squares so they fit perfectly, and reduce the bake time slightly.

I could not find won-ton wrappers. What can I use instead?

You can use phyllo pastry which will come out a bit flakier or puff pastry for a super buttery and rich bite.
