Blue cheese dressing is my favorite for salads, and it has been since I was a kid. I almost always choose it for a salad in a restaurant – and it’s a huge disappointment if it turns out to be ranch dressing with some blue cheese added. Good chunky blue cheese dressing is thick and creamy with a little tang and lots of blue cheese.

This recipe comes from The Chart House Restaurant, and I’ve enjoyed it for many years. I realized recently that I had never really read it through all the way; I always just mixed the ingredients together and chilled the dressing. Sometimes it was way too thick, but I just thinned it a bit and served anyway. One day when I finally paid attention to the instructions, I realized it was supposed to be made with a mixer. I was a bit skeptical, thinking that the chunks of blue cheese would be completely blended in. To my surprise, the blue cheese stayed chunky, and the consistency of the dressing was really smooth and creamy. It’s amazing what happens when you follow instructions!

Recipe Ingredients

Sour Cream. Full fat or low fat, if you like. This is what gives the dressing that extra delicious tangy taste.

Spices. A combination of dry mustard, black pepper, and garlic powder.

Onion. Grated so you get all of the bite-y flavor without any chunks of onion. The only chunks we want here are the blue cheese!

Worcestershire Sauce. A savory condiment that balances the tanginess and richness of the dressing.

Mayonnaise. Classic ingredient to make the creamiest dressing with blue cheese chunks.

Blue Cheese. Choose your preference of larger crumbled chunks or smaller crumbles.
