I found this recipe for Black Cherry Jello Pie in an old cookbook that was put together by former members of my 4-H club back in the late 1980’s.  This pie is a combination of two delicious desserts – cherry pie and cherry jello.

Cherry pie filling takes the place of the cold water that is usually added after the jello mix is dissolved in hot water.  Adding butter gives a silky finish to the filling when it is set.

You can certainly use prepared whipped topping, but making from heavy cream is definitely worth the trouble.  Add a little almond extract to the cream and powdered sugar for a delicious pairing to the cherry flavor of the pie.  The recipe lends itself well to improvisation – I’ve been thinking of trying this with grape jello and blueberry pie filling next!

Ingredients

1 x 9″ Pie Crust. Use store-bought or use my recipe for the best homemade pie crust. It forms the base of the pie and provides a delicious crust to hold the cherry jello and cherry pie filling.

Black Cherry Jello Mix. This is the primary flavoring and thickening agent for the cherry jello pie. It gives the pie its characteristic cherry flavor and helps it set into a gelatinous consistency.

Boiling Hot Water. The hot water is used to dissolve the jello mix and create the gelatin that will set the pie.

Cherry Pie Filling. The cherry pie filling adds juicy chunks of fruit and extra cherry flavor.

Butter. The butter is used to enrich the flavor of the cherry jello layer.

Whipped Topping. slightly sweetened whipping cream adds a creamy and light element to the pie.

Almond Extract. The almond extract adds a pleasant almond flavor to the whipped topping, complementing the cherry jello and cherry flavors.
Overall, this recipe will create a delightful cherry-flavored jello pie with a buttery crust, cherry pie filling, and a delicious almond-flavored whipped topping.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can I use a different flavor of jello mix instead of black cherry?

Yes, you can use a different flavor of jello mix if you prefer. Feel free to experiment with flavors like strawberry, raspberry, or even lemon to create your own unique variation of the cherry jello pie.

Can I use a pre-made pie crust or should I make it from scratch?

Homemade is best but yes, you can use a pre-made pie crust if you prefer a quicker and more convenient option. Store-bought pie crusts are readily available in most grocery stores and can be used as a time-saving alternative to making the crust from scratch.

How long does the jello pie need to set in the refrigerator before serving?

The setting time for the jello pie will depend on the specific jello mix you use. Generally, jello takes a few hours to set completely in the refrigerator. Follow the instructions on the jello package for the recommended setting time.

What is the best way to store any leftovers?

If you have any leftover cherry jello pie, you should store it in the refrigerator. Cover the pie with plastic wrap or place it in an airtight container to prevent it from drying out or absorbing other odors in the fridge. The pie should stay fresh for a couple of days when properly stored.
